Shauna’s Homemade Tomato Sauce
This homemade tomato sauce is my favourite thing to prepare and have at arms reach in my refrigerator. It’s great because it’s super versatile and can be used in any recipe that calls for tomato sauce. It’s so affordable and easy to make but completely delicious all at the same time! Trust me when I say, you may want to double this recipe because it is just too good to last you long enough!
4 Whole Tomatoes
1 Tbsp. Salt
1 Tsp. Cracked Black Pepper
1 Pinch. Red Chili Flakes
1 Tbsp. Extra Virgin Olive Oil
½ Small White Onion Chopped
1/4th Tomato Paste
2 Tbsp. Italian Seasoning
2 Cloves. Garlic Minced
LET’S GET STARTED!
- De-stem, de-seed, and dice your tomatoes. Add them to your food processor along with all your other ingredients (except for the tomato paste and garlic)
- Pulse until everything is well combined, leaving some chunks of tomatoes and onion for a chunky textured sauce (If you’re not into chunky tomato, you can just pulse longer to get a smooth consistency)
- Transfer the mixture into a pot/pan over medium-high heat. Let it simmer as you stir for about 5mins to release the water content from the tomatoes. Now add in your tomato paste and stir. Simmer while stirring often for about 8-10mins. It’s important to let your tomato paste cook thoroughly or you could be left with a tarty taste.
- The more your sauce simmers, the deeper in colour it will become. When you begin to see a dark red bubbling foam like consistency at the edge/corners of your sauce you know it is basically done. Add your garlic towards the end and stir and simmer for another 2mins. Remove from heat, and cool.
Note: You can store your sauce in a jar or container. This sauce can stay in the fridge for about 7 days or in the freezer in a Ziploc Bag for up to 2 months. Enjoy!
